We set out to visit our son Josh in Nanjing, China, and discovered a strange old world with cultural differences that gave us mixed feelings... some good, some wonderful, some perplexing. We traveled to Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing, The Great Wall at Badaling, and Xi'an and saw wonderous and extraordinary historic sites, ancient relics and archeology, breathtaking landscapes and stunning artwork. We learned to embrace and respect the peaceful people of China and dispell many myths we had prior to our arrival. Even while they stared
at our foreign faces, we felt honored by their awe of us and their desire to meet us, get to know us,
touch us and photograph us! Read our essay: "Things We Learned In China..."

Our thanks to Josh and his adorable girlfriend Daisy (Dongyan) for hosting us for our first week, and to our Australian friend and teacher Leoni for her advice and tips that eased our way to Beijing and Xi'an, and to our many new friends who once were "Foreigners" but learned to adapt: Pub owner Ian Ross (Scotland) and musician Karl (Ireland), graphic designer Ronald Paredes (Venezuela), entrepreneur businessman Michael Ward (Great Britain), MBA candidates Chee Koopthavonrerk and Nat Permsup (Thailand), teachers Sheila & Howard Avery (Canada) and their friends Fiona & Darryl (Australia), scorpion-mate Tom Hunter & his mom Jenny (Australia), plus the many other traveling and working Aussies, Brits, Italians, Spaniards, Fins, Germans and Americans we met along the way while waiting for trains or just looking for coffee. Thank you all for being the best part of what travel is all about!
